Miniature Pinscher

About This Breed

The Miniature Pinscher is an old German breed developed from the Dobermann's ancestors, NOT from the Dobermann itself. Though they resemble a miniature Dobermann, they are actually an older breed. Known as the 'King of Toys,' Min Pins are proud, lively, and assertive. They have a signature 'hackney-like' high-stepping gait to match their spirited personality. They are fearless and often unaware of their small size. They require a confident, consistent owner.

Temperament

PersonalityAlert · Outgoing · Responsive · Clever · Fearless

Usually active. Make time for play, exercise, and activities that keep it interested.

Often seeks company and attention. Allow time together and help it get used to short periods alone.

Coat care

Usually needs relatively little coat care. Brush as needed for its coat and shedding.

Usually sheds relatively little. Low shedding does not mean an animal cannot cause allergies.

Living together

Often adjusts to changes fairly well, though a gradual introduction still helps.

Teach children to handle it gently and leave it alone when it rests.

Introduce other pets gradually and watch how each animal responds.

Training and activities

Practice in short sessions and reward the behavior you want.

Choose walks, sniffing games, and play to suit the dog’s age and health. Allow rest as well.

A lifespan range is not a prediction for an individual animal. Breed scores cannot diagnose illness or replace a veterinary assessment.

Breed Overview

Known as the “king of toy breeds,” the Miniature Pinscher is a regal and commanding dog that doesn’t seem to realize he is so tiny. Min Pins, as they’re often called, are only about 1 foot tall at the shoulder and weigh no more than 11 pounds. But they are energetic, confident dogs with boundless curiosity and a big personality. Miniature Pinschers trace their lineage back hundreds of years to Germany, where they worked to keep rats out of barnyards. Contrary to a common misperception, Miniature Pinschers are not mini Doberman Pinschers.

Care Guide

While Min Pins require minimal grooming, they are intelligent, high-energy dogs that need ample exercise, consistent training, and attentive supervision. These little pups tend to think they’re much larger than they actually are, and their fearless nature can easily get them into trouble.
